Hey Dave: Don't get me wrong on this. Audie Murphy was, is, and always will be a real personal hero for me, but a hero in the military only.
His Congressioal Medal of Honor was earned by his unselfish bravery far above and beond the call of duty. He deserved every medal, award, and honor that he recieved. Plus the admiration of the entire nation.
Although short of stature, Audie was a giant among men.
But to want to award him the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom for becoming an average 'B' movie actor with a drinking problem and a very troubled home life after his heroic military career, just doesn't make sense to me.
I'd rather set up a rehab center on an Arizona reservation in honor of Ira Hayes, another Medal of Honor winner. A Marine who helped raise our flag on Mt. Suribachi, who drown one rainy night, passed out in a drunken stupor, face down in a Phoenixwater-filled dirt ditch. That would make sense to me.
I honor true heros for what the did in war, not for what they might have become after.
But if you want to consider the Medal of Freedom for Medal of Honor winners, try either Sen, Bob Kerry, or like Audie, a shorter than the averge real hero, this Jewish kid from Brooklyn, Jack Jacobs, who like Kerry, won his MoH in Vietnam.
Like Kerry, Col (USA (Ret). Jacobs has worked tirelessly to help veterans of all wars and wrote a best-selling book, 'If Not Now, When?'
Again, I idolize Murphy for his wartime heroics, but like all men, he was only human. Just like all of us.

Thank you for publishing this, the passing of an American Super Hero, and that is what COL Robert L. Howard was. My time in Vietnam, a mere 27 months, was made more secure and safe by tough and courageous men such as Bob Howard, and Bob Howard himself. I never met COL Howard, but knew many who knew and worked with him. Poor young man from the South, inspired by his heroic father and uncles of World War II service, Howard gave it all, all the time. His exploits are legendary, Bob stood his ground, until this horrible illness took him home. Bless COL Howard and bless our soldiers, every single one, politics do not factor into soldier business or their missions, keep heroism clean and unfettered from such drivel, we honor our soldiers and heroes such as Bob Howard..

Thank you for the venue.
