Mike, thanks for the thoughtful and thorough reply. While I wholeheartedly disagree with your (apparent) assessment that John McCain is not a patriot, you've laid out the evidence that (again apparently) led you to reach this conclusion.

Needless to say, we will have to agree to disagree.

No one is ignoring the Senator's past, especially not himself. I know many POW"s, having worked in the movement, including the late Col. Laird Gutterson who was a friend, that were not, lets say aligned with the Senator. Having been raised in Arizona, I can safely say that the Senator's approval rating amongst combat veterans of the Vietnam war was dismal. For years the Senator was of little help with VA Health Care legislation and with the addressing the complications of Agent Orange. To consider privatizing the VA and to not vote for the new GI Bill, is indeed not very patriotic, regardless of how far back in history one wants to live. We govern and legislate in the present

John McCain committed crimes; he got caught and he served his time. The North Vietnamese people, being forgiving, hold no animosity towards him today. There has to be more to patriotism than just doing what you're told.
