The 60 Minutes segments tonight were the most respectful and revealing of the nature of war, then I have seen in years. And then the PBS Memorial Day Concert just knocked it out of the park.Do not miss this. I am pretty sure it plays again tomorrow.

Good points. But I doubt that God would understand what a "just war is". Of course defeating the Nazis in WWII was important but we won because of military important points. i.e. We had broken their codes. Also for the Japanese. We broke their codes also. It would have been a different type of war if we had not.
The North winning the Civil War was a fight over good vs. evil. But there are many grey areas in history. I for one am glad that Alexander the Great launched his pre-emptive war against the Persians. If the Persians had had another go at Greece our way of life would be radically different. Those victories over the Persians meant that the Persians were done, never to invade Europe again. There are many others in history. The final push back of the Mongolians by the Europeans, The defeat and pushback of the Moors in France. War does settle things. Ask Napoleon at Waterloo, Hitler, etc etc.

While there are those that honor the sacrifice of war, and that is something I
acknowledge, I believe at its core war is selfish. In the old days we would be
inspired by our leader as we fought the good fight. Our leader was there, not
just because we had an election; but because of our support through our elected
representatives. Once it was figured out how to circumvent receiving permission
from the people by not declaring war, everyone could absolve themselves of the
horrors being committed. Gains could be achieved without responsibility. Of
course we the people could demand accountability; but, we choose to receive
without blame.

Our secular materialism has ruled out the spiritual presence that would
guide a war that is just. So yes, as God has been declared dead to our
consciousness, we have lost the desire to strive for the victory that signals the
end of all war.

Just picked up a copy of "AWOL, The unexcused absence of America's upper classes from military service" by Kathy Roth-Douquet. I have not had a chance to read it as yet but it looks like it follows your data.
Can't tell you about the lower classes going into combat but my son went and three of his friends from his high school went here in Tucson. Between them they saw a lot of combat. I wouldnt call them lower classes?!!
But you are right in the fact that the family goes to war. We (as well as the other families) never knew when the grey sedan with two Army officers were going to be at the driveway with the bad news.
He is done now and in school. But I still think about his friends who never came home and was it worth the cost. True for all wars.
