48 States and the District of Columbia have filed legal complaints to the Supreme Court in support of the Father of a young Marine who died in Iraq. The father sued anti-gay protesters affiliated with the Westboro Church Baptist Church in Kansas, who believe that the death of Cpl Matthew Snyder is a result of God’s punishment for the Untied States Armed Forces tolerance of gays in the military.
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case to determine whether or not the protesters are protected by the First Amendment. The brief that was filed on June 1st, 2010, indicates a compelling interest in protecting the sanctity of funerals.
Are not the Westboro Baptists mocking God? How can they prop themselves up into the throne of judgment and declare the source of killing? Is there not some queer form of idolatry of belief here?
If they are intractable in their belief and need to protest, I would be happy to raise the money to purchase some tickets to Iraq, so they could go to the source of the war- and meet their creator at the source of the action.

I agree w/ you re: those miscreants from kansas. Superstition (religion) breeds some totally unacceptable behaviors. Worshiping execution devices (some cults even hang a body on them), Pretending to drink blood and eat flesh on a perfectly good Sunday morning is nothing if not grotesque.

This will be another interesting case vis a vis the limits of free speech. Of course they’re wacked, but being wacked and being especially unpleasant is still protected. On the other hand, funerals are special circumstances and the attendees should have a right to quiet contemplation and grieving on such an occasion.

IMHO, disrupting a funeral, especially a militaty funeral, is the same thing as shouting FIRE! in a drarkened, crowded theater. Go to jail!

Free speech is not an absolute right. Time, manner, place restrictions have been OK’d by SCOTUS on numerous occasions. It’s one thing to say all funerals can have a protected bubble around them to keep away hateful protesters. It’s quite another to say the bubble is only placed around the funerals of dead GIs.
I think the court will give half a loaf on this one, allow for protests but at a defined distance.
