Tucson Mayor Announces Plan To End Veteran Homelessness

Of all the cities in the United States that could pull this off, Tucson is one that has a head start and the resources to be in the vanguard. With the laudable track record of programs like Esperanza and Escalante, the Mayor’s declaration can manifest with the evidence based success of the three decades of volunteerism in the veteran community.  Si se Puede!

Lisa Markkula, Communications Director
Office of the Mayor
o: (520) 791-4201

TUCSON, AZ – June 21, 2013

Who: Mayor Jonathan Rothschild
Representatives from: CODAC, Compass, City of Tucson Housing, Police and Fire Departments, the DM50, Primavera, the Red Cross, the Veterans Administration, other service providers

What: The White House has announced an initiative to end veterans homelessness by 2015 and Tucson is one of 25 flagship cities selected to lead this effort.

Mayor Rothschild has embraced this challenge and formed a working group to focus on identifying homeless and chronically homeless veterans and placing 52 a month into housing – all while cutting the HUD VASH Voucher processing time in half, from 40 days to 20 days. HUD, of course, stands for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and VASH stands for Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing.

“Our homeless veterans run the gamut from chronic homeless to students taking classes at Pima or the U of A and living in their cars,” said Mayor Rothschild. “We can get both populations – chronic homeless and recent homeless – off the street and into housing. We’re working hard to make this happen quickly, but it certainly won’t be easy. It’s going to require commitment from our city departments and employees, from our agency partners, and from our community.”

    1. Esperaza and Escalante Home for Veterans is run with Federal Grants and donations. It was originated with leased land from Davis Monthan and the Department of the Air Force, one of a kind transaction. They now own the land. They have bedn operating for 20 years. The other one is the former Coming Home program. I believe they changed their name however. They do not seek fanfare but have been in the news often.

  1. Mike:
Isn’t this a Federal Gov’t issue. Although you now how I feel about helping Vets but is this another feel good Progressive City Council issue. I can’t even drive on our streets with damaging my tires and the cops can’t even keep up with the crime.
To quote the prior comment….Where are the resources?

    1. I’ve decided that we must live in different cities with the name “Tucson”. Because I’ve lived here for a few years now and I don’t have any problems driving on the streets, haven’t suffered any crime, and haven’t been invaded by mexicans.
In fact, the city I live in is very peaceful with friendly neighbors and even the traffic isn’t bad. I’ve lived in a lot worse places.

      1. Rainbows and unicorns……I have been here since 1966. Wife’s family since 1919. I my house has been robbed several times, (different homes). My town is racked by crime. Just because YOU have not experienced crime doesn’t mean it does not exist.
41% of town is Hispanic. Tell me what the crime rate is among Hispanics. I dare you.

        1. P.S. I tried to leave you a link with crime statistics, but Mike’s settings won’t allow links without moderation, but you can easily google them yourself

        2. Mikes settings also delete my comments. Anyway Tucson’s crime rate is not bad at all. Much better than “conservative” Tulsa, but not as good as San Francisco.

          1. You are naive. Lots of crime in Tucson. I don’t know what planet you live on but Tucson has problems. Go talk to a cop. Or better yet do a “Ride Along with TPD” if they still do that. I did many years ago.

You brought up the topic of being “invaded by mexicans”..and if you “don’t have any problems “driving on the streets”..LOL Guess you have not seen the roads recently. I have to keep an eye on the road just to avoid the potholes.

For their % of people living in Tucson the Hispanics seem to have a problem with crime. I still dare you.

          2. 1) Just because you have been robbed doesn’t mean Tuscon crime rate is that high – the facts are different (and available, just research it).
            2) I’ve never lived anywhere where I didn’t have to keep my eyes on the road – Google is coming up with a car for that. But I see streets daily, and I must live in a different city.
            3) I don’t know what the Hispanic/white crime breakdown is – I would be willing to concede it is disproportionate, if you would be willing to acknowledge that the white population is considerably older are wealthier. That is normal – crimes are overwhelmingly committed by young males and the poor.

          3. Sort of sums it up…doesn’t it. Young and poor Hispanics creating crime and victimizing on the rest of the population. Looks like the future of Tucson. Many generations of young people (some poor) have lived here and didn’t create the crime that has become so common. And you seem to think that’s OK or even normal.
Looks to me that the next job openings for the next 50 years will be jailers, cops and probation professionals. Sure won’t be road repair jobs! LOL But you don’t seem to have driven over (or around ) any potholes! lol
the future of my town is doomed. And all Mayor Rothschild and his Progressives want to do is to continue the Liberal agenda. All while the “old and rich, white” populations (as you like to portray them) move out. Tip…they are moving to Vail, the foothills and Marana and Oro Valley. Guess we can all ride the trolley to downtown and have a beer.
This town is so screwed. And I am ashamed.

          4. Nope – you’re being racist (or nativist) again), Young white males are just as crime prone as Hispanic ones and Tucson’s crime rate is better than, say, white southern christian towns. It is apparent that you have decided that “the other” is the cause of all problems, and that sort of thinking has never worked out well.

          5. Watch the news tonight. See who is arrested for crime. But you never see the potholes in the roads or the massive cracks.
Look into who is in the prisons. Ohhh…but those are oppressed peoples who are arrested for no reason by evil white cops.

          6. >Look into who is in the prisons.

You think you are being sarcastic, but that is the truth. We have more people in prison than any other country, and they are far out of proportion non-white.

But you can’t blame the cops – they are just doing their jobs. You have to blame the voters and our laws that criminalize drugs and sentencing laws which target the poor.

Rich white people rarely go to prison, and don’t need to steal a loaf of bread to feed their family – they have their martinis and bourbon and prescriptions.

          7. For Fraser007: You are absolutely correct and Kudos. Anyone who uses the name Tip O’Neil, as their pseudonym, gets away with it because he died 19 years ago. Add to that, the logo used is from facebook, that was created by the Progressive Activists, is self-defining. That logo was used showing The ‘Statue of Liberty’ and ‘Lady Justice’ in each other’s arms using the “Gone With the Wind” pose to support gay couples and marriage. If this ‘Tiponeill’ might want to take a Tip. Quit lying! The only way to live here for 3 years and not be educated is to live in a cave or not even live here. I’ve had that problem with the creator of this blog who hasn’t lived in Tucson for a decade. Here’s my suggestion for the ‘Tipster”: Go to the Southside and shop at Walmart after 7pm. Take a walk down 6th Ave. or 12th Ave. at 8pm by yourself. Post here when you get out of the E.R. That is if you’re alive. Get real. I moved to Tucson in the early 60’s. Bunk is bunk. That is my input. Have a nice day.

          8. Thanks for your input but “tiponeill” is a nickname based upon my legal name (as it was tip’s – Thomas P ONeill) .

I’m quite proud of my logo – it demonstrates that I’m not a bigot and support equality for gays.

And I don’t shop at Walmart.

Anyone can research crime statistics for themselves, since I can’t post links, but I’m sure every city has a bad neighborhood, even “conservative” ones like Tulsa – or places in Alabama.

I’ve only lived here for about 5 years but I moved because I have family here who have lived here much longer, and none of us have had a crime problem.

Which may not prove anything – but the crime stats do,

          9. I have been here 43 years. And my screen name is my 30 pound black Scottish Terrier. He doesn’t take crap from anyone.

          10. Sir Twilledge I would like you to call my office number in Tucson and leave your contact information. 520-540-7000 Your confabulations about me have become intolerable. I have property in more than one state,,just like Senator McCain. I commute frequently and have ancestral roots dating to 1878. The taxes I pay in Arizona are the same currency as yours.I have a wide array of readers who are not quite as obsessed, nor as intractably angry as you and quite happy with the tidbits of scoop that are afforded them via this blog. Private emails beget a polar opposite view as yours—yet from previous trysts It is apparent that you may well be one those forever polar oppositionally defiant characters. To prove us wrong tell us what you like about life/

          11. Sir Brewer,
You must think I am ignorant to call that number, which is not your number. It’s a verterans office not your personal business office. You have a history of taking info and attacking people you disagree with by breaching their privacy. Harassing and threatening people through their private addresses is a Federal Offense. That brings into play, who gave you private info that was not submitted. Now Tucson Citizen is involved with invasion of privacy. I don’t understand what is intolerable since I’ve only commented on this page on one other subject. I avoid this confrontational page, but the description on Tucson Citizen says Tucson Citizen for Tucson Citizens. A snowbird is not a citizen who can even vote here. Blog in your own city and state in which you reside. If politics were left out of your posts and commentary, there would be no issues. You are heavily involved with the left-wing progressive movement. A person cannot be a moderator of a page that has posts with comments and debates, when the owner is the one posting issues for debate. That requires a third party not the creator/owner. I’m not going to compose an essay, so I will end this discussion. Any info and contradictory posts made by you can be found simply by using a google search with your name. Have a nice bi-polar day.

          12. So lets play.. How much in taxes might you imagine Snowbirds pay? Your fair city would not exist without us. I probably pay more in annual taxes on the property that is owned by our family estate than you have paid in ten years. As for your reference to bi-polar, would you kindly define your reference…at least before I sue you for libel. I am so far from Left Wing politics that one has to wonder if you have a GED. I am an adherent of the John Birch Society….most of the members being far beyond your IQ. So play on…unhappy man. If you had some balls you would leave your contact information on my office line. That is in fact our office in Tucson. Should you one day grasp my ongoing involvement with the investigation of Rio Nuevo, you may change your lame comments. So now, go forth young man, hard to imagine you are young, or at at peace with yourself, and inform us about what you know about blogging. And please add what you have learned from all your ex wifes.

          13. Oh BTW. what in Gods name makes you think your ISP has a thing to do to do with the TC.com? I am a retired PI. and can find out just about everything about you in about 5 minutes. As you are so proud of boasting about your Google searches on myself. Be careful amigo, karma is real.
