Non-Partisan Glimpse of Tucson Voters

capitol-domeThese statistics pretty much tell the story of how the village feels about partisan politics. Nearly 28% of the voters are Independent registrants. I am told that number is rapidly rising.

Are these folks marginalizing themselves for a reason? Is the duopoly just not their cup of tea? What is the true profile of the Independent? When is the last time you ever heard the word, “Platform?” What is the party platform? It appears to me that the dyed in the wool ideologues should have a party of their own. Any operator of a business lives with the dictum, “the market speaks.” It is clear as can be that the market place of the voters is speaking, and they do not like the menu that is offered.

Have the readers heard of the WHIG party that has metamorphosed? I am told they are comprised of a large number of young veterans.

  1. Very interesting stats Mike. Can you provide us with the total # of potential voters in the City, and thereby what percentage of  the population actually registers to vote and declare a political party?
In some wards listed above (1,3, 5, 6) there are more Independents than either Democrats or Republicans.
    Thanks.

  2. To quote John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton (1834–1902), the historian and moralist, who wrote in 1887:

“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power (tends to)  corrupt absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.”
What we are witnessing, almost on a daily occurrence, are the symptoms of a more systemic and devastating disease, the lack of time tested values present in our entrusted elected leaders: integrity, honesty, patience, trustworthiness, truth and more. We are witness to self-serving decision making with unaccounted results. We see the results of a top down hierarchy of decision makers who have a symbiotic relationship with their bosses who’s backs are scratched on a daily basis by themselves and each other.  A cancer is among us for if when these leaders and officials lie to us once, tho we would like to, we can never really trust them to tell us the truth about anything ever again. For the most part, we would like for it to be different, but it never is. When running, they express that they will do good and once elected, they find a way to do well. We all pay for that result both directly in their compensation as well as indirectly in the resulting decay of the moral fiber within the community; we then cannot trust others and we become disaffilliated. Yet we still seek time tested values, if only for a brief time; if for no other reason that to feel good about who we are as individuals within as a community even if that community is made up of one. Thank you Rob O’Dell, please keep up your good work.

  3. Good job on the stats. Mike! At the last general election there were just over 1 million people in Pima County and just over one third of them were registered to vote. The actual number was 35% if I’m not mistaken. I can’t remember what the turnout was, in numbers, but it was the highest on record. More and more people are voicing their political opinions at the polls than ever before in Pima county and they aren’t doing it along standard party lines!

  4. I don’t feel I am marginalizing myself as an Independent. I registered as an Independent because I do not feel any current political party suits me completely, especially the Dysfunctional Duo.

What I would really like to see are candidates that take a stand on an issue and stick with it come He!!or high water. I would probably drop dead if politicians started working for their constituents rather than the special interests or their next job once they leave office. I’d also like to see something done about campaign finance reform (and ever other kind of reform)  that involves real reform, not just posturing and photo ops, no matter what size contributors toes get stepped on.
